Jonathan should’ve consulted on UNILAG – Gowon

Gowon

Former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, insists that the protests over the renaming of University of Lagos after the late Chief Moshood Abiola could have been avoided if President Goodluck Jonathan had consulted widely.

In his nationwide broadcast on May 29, Jonathan said the government decided to honour Abiola, believed to be the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, by naming UNILAG after him for his contribution to democracy in the country.
However, the government immediately came under intense criticism, with the students of the university embarking on street demonstrations.
But speaking in Benin on Tuesday, Gowon regretted the aftermath of the name change, saying the protests could have been avoided.

The Dana Plane Crash: The pains, grief and controversies

Getting access from the Ile-Chelsea Bus Stop to the Toyin Street site of the crash, was like passing through the Biblical needle’s eye as thousands of people trooped to the scene causing unprecedented human  and vehicular traffic. But for the thick darkening smoke coming from a certain direction, sympathizers would have had difficulties locating the building that the aircraft crashed into. Men of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF; Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC; Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAN; were seen in the midst of the crowd.

Alleged N6.5bn fraud: Sylva docked, remanded in EFCC custody

Trial of the former governor of Bayelsa State, Mr Timipre Sylva, who is facing corruption charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, kicked off on a dramatic note, yesterday, as a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered his remand in prison custody.
However, the order was reversed barely two minutes after it was made yesterday, with presiding Justice Adamu Bello directing the EFCC to keep the accused person in its custody till tomorrow when the merit of his application for bail would be determined.

Former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipriye Sylver sandwiched by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission officials after his case was adjourned by to June 7th at the Federal High Court, CBD, Abuja.
Shortly after, Sylva who was docked at exactly 11:20 a.m, pleaded not guilty to the six-count criminal charge entered against him by the anti-graft agency, his counsel, Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, begged the court to either grant him bail on self recognition or on liberal terms.

Oshiomhole alleges plot by PDP to rig Edo guber poll

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has raised an alarm over alleged plans by the opposition party to manipulate July 14 governorship election in the state through the use of federal employees to conduct the election.
But the state PDP, however, dismissed the governor’s claim, describing it as spurious alarm.

Adams Oshiomhole
This came as the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from making further use of Electronic Collapsible Transparent Ballot Boxes, ECTBB.
The governor who spoke at an interactive session with members of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA,  in the state at the Police Officers’ Mess, Benin City, argued that the pronouncement of the Director-General of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to stop the use of Youth Corps members for the election would  only cause confusion in the state.

My vision is to be the voice of excellence - Paul Adefarasin

Paul Adefarasin is the founder and senior pastor of the House on the Rock, located in Lagos. In this piece, KEHINDE OYETIMI looks at the life and rise of the cleric.

HIS is an intimidating physique but that quickly dissolves when approached. He carries a mien quite contrary to his frame. For quite a lot of church, celebrating the life of Pastor Adefarasin at his present would be adjudged incomplete without an equal dose of appreciation of what his past housed. His life demonstrates how much the grace and how far the power of God could be harnessed to straighten out the life of any man.

A LETTER TO MY SON'S TEACHER FROM ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Abraham Lincoln’s letter to his son’s Head Master

Respected Teacher,

My son will have to learn I know that all men are not just, all men are not true. But teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader. Teach him that for every enemy there is a friend.

It will take time, I know; but teach him, if you can, that a dollar earned is far more valuable than five found.

Teach him to learn to lose and also to enjoy winning.

Steer him away from envy, if you can.
